The hype is true when it comes to the legendary Salt and Straw Ice Cream scoop shops that are currently trending in Portland. Their claim to fame is farm fresh, handmade ice cream, in the typical flavors (cookie dough, vanilla bean), and the not so typical flavors – mulled wine sorbet, bourbon pecan pie, butter roasted chestnuts, etc. I sampled the cookie dough and almond brittle with salted ganache, served in a homemade waffle cone. On warm summer nights, the line can wrap clear around the corner at both locations (NW 23rd and Alberta), so plan accordingly. You can also purchase pints to take home. Needless to say, whenever I have an ice cream craving, I will be heading there.
