Selling During the Holidays

Eager buyers, less competition make season a great time to sell

By JOHN KIRKLAND ‌SPECIAL WRITER

The holidays are here, and some sellers who have had their homes on the market for a while may think it’s time to pull up the “for sale” sign and wait for the spring flood of buying activity.

Not so fast. Realtors say this is a great time to sell your home. In fact, the holidays can be a unique opportunity unlike the rest of the year.

The housing inventory in the Portland metro area has been tightening for months, which has created a competitive atmosphere for homebuyers. It’s shortened the time homes spend on the market and in many cases resulted in competitive bids that have driven up price. Vigorous buying activity in October — an increase of almost 43 percent from a year ago — reduced the supply to a level not seen since the housing bubble was at its peak.

Inventory tends to go down even further during the holidays because many sellers put their listings on hold or postpone the decision to list until spring.
